Absolutely nothing happens when I power the printer on or off, or when I
unplug it or plug it into either of the USB ports.

Also, I have tried changing my lilo.conf to boot with and without devfs. No
obvious change in the behaviour. I started out without devfs support. At
the moment I have the support turned on. (I made this change at about 2:30
am, in sheer desperation to try to get some kind of communication with the
printer. As I say, it didn't seem to change anything.)

PS I appreciate very much this reasonably scientific approach, rather than
the "this worked for me, try it" approach, which I have found in the past
to be very well-meaning but ultimately not very useful. I would really like
to understand what's wrong here, otherwise I won't be learning anything. I
think I am right in my original supposition that there is something awry
with the USB stuff.

PPS I posted something a while back about when I tried to get my Visor to
sync using USB and jpilot. It worked 16 times, with the device number
incrementing once each time, and then stopped working. I got sufficiently
frustrated that I put it on a Windows box where, of course (and to my
chagrin) it has worked perfectly for several months. FWIW, I could only get
it to work at all with devfs support turned off at boot time.
