Also, is the printer connected directly to the motherboard USB ports, or 
to a hub?

I've had problems with a couple of peripherals (USB mouse*, USB ADSL 
modem**) which were fixed by moving them round so that the awkward ones 
were directly connected to the motherboard.

For what it's worth, my Lexmark Z42 appears not to be bothered by which 
USB port it's connected to.
