If that's really the case you could just hit <ctrl>,<alt> & <backspace> to 
restart X. If not I'd opt for 'memtest' and run a check.
BTW disabling USB services at boot helped quite a few with various symptoms:)

Another thing I'm wonderous about: Can the Laptop hibernate (i.e shut the 
lid) for a longer period of time without freezing?
