how is it that you know which is freezing? if it is only X, where are you 
coming by that information?

are you running these services, and how can you be _sure_ you do NOT have 
shared video mem? have you tried passing mem=248 in the lilo append 
statement? (256 real mem - 16 meg for video mem [and a couple for safety and 
"bad" math] and see if any of those services I named are starting when you 
check you dmesg. if they are, try turning them off.
