try killall -KILL procesname
And, btw, what windows manager are you using? 
If you are using gnome, maybe you must do it:
- Go to gnome control center
- Go to Session Properties & Startup
- Uncheck the "Save changes on exit" control.
- Delete the "Default" session.
- Do not save the session on exiting gnome.
Now, restart x and enter gnome. Is the process there?
In kde, I believe the way is kcontrol - system - Session administrator.
