Try xfs. I've been using reiserfs on all partitions for more than half a year, mostly because of journaling. I have 600Mhz PIII with 128Mb RAM and the system always seemed rather sluggish to me. I blamed it on kde, but when I I tried xfs, everything started to fly, the wait times decreased almost 30% (I measured with kernel build: user and system times practically the same both under reiser and xfs, but elapsed time with xfs about 30% less. Yes, the test in both cases was on the newly created fs in the same partition). What's more important, the system started to be more responsive. Konqueror and kmail for example took at least 10 seconds to come up, now it's 4 or 5. The only drawback, the fs with a lot of small files take much more space, my /usr is more than 100Mb bigger than with reiser (total size is 1Gb).
