There's nothing in /usr/doc/sane-[version-number]?  No sane.ps there?
If there is a sane.ps, try

$ gv sane.ps &

    Charles> When I run "scanimage --list-devices -v" as root, I get a
    Charles> core dump. When I run it as a user, nothing appears to

Try

$ find-scanner

    Charles> root@charlesc # cat /proc/scsi/scsi Attached devices:

    Charles> First question, how do I map that to a device?

This was a question I had when I set up the Gimp to use sane. My
scanner showed up on /dev/sga, information 'find-scanner' supplied.
/dev/scanner is a symlink to /dev/sga.  I don't remember if I did the
symlink or whether running a program did it.

    Charles> Second, do I need to launch the sane daemon or do

See man saned or sane.ps. I believe the sane daemon is if you want to
network the scanner. There are some files in /etc/sane.d/ which have
to be edited, such as net.conf and (for me) umax.conf.

    Charles> Third, is this the sort of question I can address to
    Charles> Installation Support, and if so will they answer it?

Don't know.
