IMO, I would try to stay away from adapters at all cost, no matter if they are AC or DC and would just do as Cor said; go with the flow of native J1772's Vs NACS's vehicle drivers in that area and start replacing these EVSE's/connectors only when that majority is reached. This will minimize other EV drivers using their adapters thus reducing possible issues with them.
Just as Phill mentioned, there are tons of AC and DC adapters out there that have minimal or zero safety requirements, some even that claim you can use them for both AC or DC charging sessions which are super dangerous devices, since these will keep the DC pins energized while doing an AC session (specifically on the NACS to CCS/J1772 way): https://a.co/d/f3ZdRwe An adapter is only one more way to introduce unnecessary faults and increase risk of fires, electric shock or EVSE connectors and vehicle inlets getting melted and stucking you in there. Last year I had the fortune to briefly work on an adapter safety FMEA assignment where we tore down a bunch of these and that confirmed exactly the safety thing. (https://driveelectric.gov/files/adapter-safety.pdf), and although this report was focused solely on DC adapters, we had to include a variant of AC ones due to the possibility of a user incorrectly plugging an AC adapter at a DCFC session and having the EVSE incorrectly sending high voltage DC to the onboard AC charger. This particularly on NACS (J3400) to J1772 adapters). An adapter can fall from peoples hands, get dirty, sand/salty, wet in the vehicle owners trunks, they add additional tension/strain forces once under use, etc. and meet minimal requirements thus far, since adapter standards, although already released are still on finishing stage and being flushed out (J3400/1 and UL 2252) Marco On Wed, Feb 5, 2025 at 10:39 AM (-Phil-) via EV <ev@lists.evdl.org> wrote: > I'm aware of the recall, they still didn't implement a mechanical interlock > as REQUIRED by the standards.
