The cynic in me also may think that the task of the remote driver is to be blamed and accept liability in the case of an accident, protecting the corporation from liability.
In the case of an Uber autonomous vehicle killing a pedestrian, Arizona prosecutors ruled that Uber was not criminally responsible for the crash. The back-up driver of the vehicle was charged with negligent homicide, and pled guilty to endangerment (a felony) , and was sentenced to three years' probation. https://apnews.com/article/autonomous-vehicle-death-uber-charge-backup-driver-1c711426a9cf020d3662c47c0dd64e35 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Elaine_Herzberg On Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 03:38:52 PM PST, Cor van de Water via EV <ev@lists.evdl.org> wrote: As far as I understand it, the only task for remote drivers is not to drive the car, but essentially to nudge a stuck car into making the right decision to get unstuck, for example when a delivery driver has blocked enough of a travel lane and the robocar cannot make up its mind whether to chance it through the remaining gap or to backtrack.
