Hi,
While I agree with Phil, the cable is thin, what he neglects to mention is that for each hot leg of 220vac, there are 2x11AWG wires, which when added together is equal to a single 8AWG line. It is Tesla’s practice to combine 2 wires of the same gauge to carry more amps than they can individually carry, which they do even in the Super chargers. And it has been my experience (I’ve converted over 100 Gen 1 UMC’s to J1772)(need a Tesla Plug? let me know) that the failure in the UMC is usually at the wall plug end (or the potted control box). I’ve actually never seen one where the line itself has failed. EVSE cord is rated to 105 deg C, which is much higher than your normal household wiring or common zip cord. I’ve used a Gen 1 UMC to charge up my Tesla at 30A for the past several years, I charge at night when the TOU cost is less, so it is cooler, but I’ve never had any trouble with it. And I have no problem plugging it in for the couple hours needed at anytime between 10pm and 5am (7hrs of 30A 240vac is more than enough for my Tesla). If I need to charge it during the day, I just spend a couple minutes to go to one of the Superchargers here. If you spent many kilobucks on an EV, you can spend $500 on a wall-mounted EVSE. Using a portable EVSE for daily use is like using a garden hose to supply water to your house.
