I was thinking of all the 1st gen EVs out there that can be had for a low price. The largest problem is their cheap (wimpy) 3kW charger. Short of tearing into the EV (loss of dealer/factory support) how can one get around this.
There are lower cost L3 EVSE that can be bought http://insideevs.com/bmw-launches-new-low-cost-dc-fast-chargers-6458/ but that 20kW L3 cost almost as much as the cheap used EV. Also in some areas, there is a limit on what a city or condo association will allow installed on the owner's own property (got permit?). Usually installing a dryer outlet is not a problem, say a 14-50 50A(?). That would allow 10kW charging. ?But where to find a source for a 10kW charger that can use the CHAdeMO L3 port? Emotorwerks might https://www.emotorwerks.com/store-juicebox-ev-charging-stations/dc-charging-systems https://www.emotorwerks.com/index.php/store-juicebox-ev-charging-stations/dc-charging-systems/97-new-chademo-tm-compatible-charge-controller-for-emotorwerks-dc-chargers/category_pathway-17/related_product-1673 CHAdeMO (TM) - compatible charge controller for EMotorWerks DC Chargers $699 There is a video on testing a prototype, see http://myimiev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2001 Anyone know about this? Applications: (if it was not too expensive). Willie could come back from a chore in one of his i-Miev EVs, plug in a 10Kw EVSE into his CHAdeMO port (charging 3x faster). While that is going on, use an e-tug to maneuver the i-miev trailer for unloading and or reloading. In a short period he has regained enough range to be on his way to complete another trip. Even if the pack should age and he loses capacity, this faster way of charging should compensate enough to give more usable life out of the EV.
