We're way off topic here, but briefly, though I'm not sure, I THINK it was
probably the widespread availability of natural gas for home use.

Early coal furnaces had to be fed by hand. Later, automatic screw-drive
stokers were available for home heating, but I seem to recall reading that
they weren't 100% reliable.

Being able to set the thermostat and let the gas provide the heat was a huge
convenience that coal just couldn't match.

Some places where coal was extraordinarily cheap continued to use coal
widely well into the late 20th century. In the early 1990s, I spent some
time in Northeast Pennsylvania. On cold winter mornings, my eyes would
smart from all the sulfur pollution in the air.

To apply this to EVs, I think the tipping point for their sales will come if
and when gasoline and Diesel fuel are not just expensive, but inconvenient
to get.
