There was quite a bit of discussion on this several years ago on the old
Yahoo Groups Thundersky site and others for the stated reason - to supply
drive/absorb regen current spikes.  Also research done and papers written on
it in the EU.  The conclusion was as David said, better to just add more
cells. There is no real weight savings (with Lithium cells) since many
supercaps are required.  They are also costly.  They are low voltage so a
high power DC/DC converter was used in the research articles, adding another
cost.  There was also a U.S. company on the east coast that advertised an ev
with lithium cells plus supercaps.  They never did sell any afaik and are no
longer in business.
