Lanolin has been used for generations for rust prevention, not least on
sawbench and planer tables, where slipperiness is an asset.

Humidity here in SE Australia is low enough that machine rust isn't an issue,
but I keep my eye out for a jar of unadulterated lanolin, not trusting
commercial admixtures entirely. Local agricultural and trade outlets usually
have a spraycan of one brand or another.

OK, we no longer make our own putty by mixing linseed oil and chalk dust, but
silly prices for unnecessarily overprocessed stuff is irksome, and what's it
diluted with?
