In the late '90s, I bought a set of Bomalloy drills, which cost me about $250 for a set of their fractional drills. That was the best investment I ever made, because ~20 years later, I still have that set. But alas, they are no more, and now that I need more number/letter drills, I have had to find alternatives. > >> These are a couple of items that I bought last week: >> http://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/64943830 > Look sweet, from the tip I assume drill and tap in one? No, that is a spiral point tap, also known as a gun tap. That particular one is for through holes, and it shoots the chips ahead of the cutting edge, so only a single tapping sequence is needed. They also make a spiral point bottoming tap that I use for manual tapping, because it needs to be removed occasionally for chip removal. Spiral flute taps are better, and they make both plug taps and bottoming taps, that can be used for tapping to the bottom of a hole in one taping sequence. They do a really good job, but they are much weaker than spiral point taps. I have a lot of 4140PH (Heat Treated to 28-32 Rc), and I do not use them with that metal (simply my personal preference). I bought this spiral flute taps some weeks ago, for mild steel: http://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/65024002 Again, obligatory release statement applies. > >> http://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/00648014 > I have 2 or 3 that look like that, probably came from a Hitachi card, > bought at Lowes, good stuff, but at Lowes, all fractional only. > > Thanks, > > Cheers, Gene Heskett -- MC Cason Eagle3D - Created by Matthias Weißer github.com/mcason/Eagle3D ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Developer Access Program for Intel Xeon Phi Processors Access to Intel Xeon Phi processor-based developer platforms.
