Ubuntu 6.06 never configured a monitor correctly for me. Maybe it is a video driver problem, but the description you give was typical of what I experienced many times with an incorrectly configured xorg.conf.
I have found Midnight Commander (a visual file manager) to be a very useful tool. It doesn't need x to run. http://www.midnight-commander.org/ With this you can navigate to and edit your .conf. To install (from memory I think this will work - but it may be in the universe repository) sudo aptitude install mc (to subsequently launch at the command line type mc).
