That is standard antibacklash technology ... the B-17 intervalometer had several sets of them with springs between the two gears to maintain loading on the gears.
Nice tight worm gear sets are made by lapping the sets. see "Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy" by Wayne R Moore, pg 221-228.
