I think this is WAY overkill unless you are running something quite a bit bigger that a Bridgeport Series-II machine. > I've been running my mill for 6 or 7 years on Mach3 with Gecko's hoping that > a good reasonably priced high power step and direction drive would be > developed. What is it about that machine that dissatisfies you? Too much rounding on square corners? If it is a series-I Bridgeport-sized machine, I really don't think you need more power than a Gecko 320 or my PWM servos can deliver. (Gecko is 1600 W or 2 Hp, mine have so far been tested above 120 V, for 2.4 KW or 3.2 Hp.) Are you using high speed motors with direct drive of the leadscrews? That is a poor "impedance match". You would get much better results with a belt reduction. 120 IPM with a 5 TPI leadscrew only needs 600 RPM! Most servo motors, unless specifically designed for very low-speed operation, are designed with their optimum output at 1800 RPM or more. You immediately cut your available power in 1/3 by using am 1800 RPM motor at 600 RPM.
If you can't achieve decent performace due to limited step pulse rates from the computer, that is a totally different story. There are a couple solutions, faster computer, hardware step pulse generation, etc. Jon ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ Emc-users mailing list [email protected] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users
