My understanding is that the Quasi-Peak detector was based on the "VU
meter", common to audio recording, The idea was to approximate the the
_perceived _loudness to the human ear. For those haven't seen one, the
VU meter is also a fast attack, slow release device and still
used/emulated in recording studios.
