"Has anyone out there done direct digital interface to the KAT500?"

Yes, I wrote out 3,000 lines of Arduino code to closely integrate my Kenwood 
TS-590S, KAT500 and KPA500.   I chose to implement RS-232 level for all the 
interfaces using cheap Chinese MAX3232 clone modules.  When they all failed I 
replaced the worthless clone MAX devices with genuine ones.  The circuit boards 
with mounted caps still made this an easier implementation that starting from 
scratch.

I wanted a hardware solution that could be used for any RS-232 interface so 
exploiting the fact that KAT will work at 5 V was of no interest to me.
