"Has anyone out there done direct digital interface to the KAT500?"
Yes, I wrote out 3,000 lines of Arduino code to closely integrate my Kenwood TS-590S, KAT500 and KPA500. I chose to implement RS-232 level for all the interfaces using cheap Chinese MAX3232 clone modules. When they all failed I replaced the worthless clone MAX devices with genuine ones. The circuit boards with mounted caps still made this an easier implementation that starting from scratch. I wanted a hardware solution that could be used for any RS-232 interface so exploiting the fact that KAT will work at 5 V was of no interest to me.
