Hi,

I have an old D-Link NAS box, with two 1 TB Drives in it, which we want to use
to store data at the Wimborne Model Town.

Hamish ran the extended smartctl test on the discs and got a straight pass off
one and a read error from the other. I then dug out an old 1 TB disc that I
had in a USB Caddy and ran the extended smartctl test on that and I also got a
read error, Hamish was using the smartctl utility on the NAS interface and I
used GSmartCtr on this machine with the caddy plugged into a USB port.

Rummaging around on the Internet, I found something about running badblocks on
the disc that I've got and it certainly has loads (currently around 400 and
still counting), so I'm assuming that the drive is on its way out at least.

I'm aware that the OS will work around badblocks, so the drive is probably
usable for a time at least. Any thoughts on how bad the disc has to be before
it isn't worth using?

We won't need all of the 1 TB of space for our purposes, so could we partition
the least bad part of the disc and use it?

If we did, what would happen when the NAS tried to build the RAID?
