They're both kind the same... The point is download and upload are both
usually translated as "télécharger" in french... Same word even though
it's not the same way.
So, as part of the french translators team for ubuntu, I did refer to
our guidelines for some terms like this one and the suggested word would
be "téléverser" which almost no one uses in real life ! (even me).
It sounds weird for most and is still somewhat ambiguous.
Another translation might be "envoyer" which is "send".
That's to say there's no easy translation in the context you're
bringing. And if you consider we (geek frog eaters) currently say
download and upload because it's not ambiguous...
Out of the whole context I'm not confident with this but : you could
keep download and upload in translated sentences since they're intended
for someone who knows what a FTP client is ! :-D
That would sound like :
* Utiliser un client FTP en mode lecture (parcours et download de
fichiers)
* Utiliser un client FTP en mode écriture (suppression et upload de
fichiers)
