Yes indeed. Is there a formal spec in any RFC we can refer to? RFC 1123's #.#.#.# doesn't cut it. RFC 3986 is very strict about the form of IP addresses in URLs. I tend to think that is closer to the right approach in this context than allowing the full insanity of inet_aton.
