It's probably a bit more common than you might realise; because it's
the basis of the "Bonjour" capability announcement system which lots
of Apple kit uses. Admittedly, that tends to be limited to the LAN,
but even so.

Multicast DNS responder; to give Bonjour a more formal name, is a
really clever design; it's a great example of how combining two
well-understood technologies (multicast and DNS in this case) can
create something new and useful.
