Eventually we'll have to get there, we'll have to put pressure on the vendors to harden all devices. What if you have a special toaster, and want to take you with you at the hotel, and you want it to retrieve the perfect toasting level for everybody in the family from some service on the web? What if you're on the road and want to print on your home or office printer - yes VPNs take care of that, but a hardened printer that only accept an encrypted authenticated connection would be easier.
