I think one of the key's to this statement is "in the room". How many companies, especially medium and large ones, have HR processes that allow non-degree holders past the first selection round? Can't get te job unless you get to the interview. I'm lucky. I got a 4 year B.A. CS and had a series of job early on that well-prepared me for advancement in IT.
