Hi Everyone, I'm replying to Rhys since he brought the discussion back, but I'm actually replying to several people.
I don't think that anyone can argue that Rhys is wrong, in that people are not joining LOPSA because of the notion that we are a bunch of dinosaurs who are unaware that the meteorite has hit. Clearly, that IS a reason that people aren't joining. I'm not saying that it is actually the case, but the NOTION that it is the case is prevalent. I've heard it, too. Painting LOPSA broadly with that brush is just as wrong as painting the modern IT Operations movement as being a bunch of snivelling nosed young upstarts is wrong. I know a lot of these snivelling nosed young upstarts, and a good number of them are older than most of the curmudgeons-in-training. Here's the point that I'm trying to make. LOPSA isn't comprised entirely (or even mostly) of dinosaurs. Granted, those people out there who ARE administering heavy iron may be more likely to be LOPSA members, but that doesn't imply that the organization is FOR people like that, any more than it's FOR the people who chew up node.js and spit out coffeescript. It's not FOR people who run a specific technology, or for people who don't. It's about getting people together who solve interesting problems, so that they can share experience and learn from each other. The actual problem is one of perception. Our communication methods are antiquated, but not largely outdated. It's just that they haven't changed. People still use mailing lists, people still use IRC. But people also use forums. People also use social media. And there are a lot of vocal people here who aren't just curmudgeons, they take pride in it, and because they're so vocal, it sounds like we've got the last 850 AIX administrators in the world as our members, when that's not even remotely the case. So now, Rhys, I'll reply directly to you. You clearly have this impression of the organization. What kinds of things would change your opinion? There are hundreds of us who work in shops which are moving into a DevOps environment (or are in one already), a large number of us work at web-scale, and I want those people to share their experiences just as much as I want to hear from the people who complained to me because I converted the LOPSAgram to HTML this month. Both have a place, but clearly, one is crowding out the other. How do we hear both voices? Let me know what you think. --Matt @standaloneSA On Mon, Aug 11, 2014 at 3:04 PM, Rhys Rhaven <r...@rhavenindustrys.com> wrote: > We had a small betting pool to predict the replies to what I said. > > [ ✓ ] Try to reduce what I said into Cloud vs Not Cloud.
