What, as an experienced systems administrator, could actually attract your attention to a job ad? What holds your attention long enough for you to write a thoughtful cover letter and update your resume?
I've been seeking work for a couple of months now (I finished my contract in one city and then moved to a smaller market) and the biggest gripe that I have is that the job titles are generally weak or nondescript. I spend far too much time following links to read job descriptions that don't fit.
"Systems Administrator" is often all that the title provided, but when you read the description it's another job entirely.
If the job requires debugging and writing software but requires an administrator background, list it as DevOps or similar; if the job is for a Windows environment, say that; if the job is for Linux/UNIX, then that should be a part of the title.
The most effective job postings that I have seen are the ones that have a clear title, followed by a description that spells out the daily tasks, lists the hard minimum requirements, and then followed by the wish list.
Also, if you have a special request for the application process, please state that clearly and by itself. Special instructions should not be buried deep in long paragraphs.
