Just to make sure the terminology is clear: the phrase "special case" has a 
specific meaning, and is in contrast to "general case". The general case is 
that externals point to <some URL>. When <some URL> equals <this repository's 
URL> that's called a special case, meaning it's a subset of all the 
possibilities. It does not imply the case is unusual.
