Hi,
This is a look to the situation from perspective of our success, how good our conferences are, how important they are.
exactly, and I'm all in favor continuing and enhancing that success.
A different perspective is to include environmental factors in the picture. So that the question would be: how can we still do our work in a good manner, but with less costs for the environment (which we still not really feel in our spendings - not yet). The interesting thing is, that this question, brought up by John, also makes us aware of existing bottle necks etc. that maybe can addressed with a different approach as well. So could we make a win win of it? Yes we can!
I'm not convinced, sorry. :-) I might have a much less sensitive attitude towards environment that you have, so please don't get me wrong and don't get the impression I want to be rude.
I just don't think it makes much sense to give up or to limit our so successful and even more important conference for environmental purposes. If we start that way, we'd have to change a lot of things: How many mirrors do we need, how many buildbots do we run? Does CollabNet use green IT? Do we really need so many hosts and services? Shall we attend trade shows at all, as that also is bad for the environment? Shall we still offer OpenOffice.org on DVD, this is also bad for the environment?
Again, please don't think I'm ignorant - I really see your point. I just don't share your view that we should limit down the conference. It would be a massive negative aspect for our community if we did so, IMHO.
