Hello.
First of all, you can take a look at the beta-version of my skin propsal for sOOo at www.spreadopenoffice.org.
Cool, looks nice. :)
I'm not done with this yet, if you have ideas to improve it, just give them to me. For example, the "GET openoffice.org"-box could get a nice artwork, it would be great if someone could create one.
The OOo Art project has Web Buttons that might be the right kind of thing:
http://marketing.openoffice.org/art/galleries/marketing/web_buttons/
<snip>
- more static site, no public user managment, no bulletin boards. End-user-information and link collection. Maybe affiliate system.
- more dynamic site with possibilty for everyone to register and add content (blogs). Community style with bulletin boards. Affiliate system.
Perhaps it's worth asking Chris Messina what he feels the most important parts of SpreadFireFox success have been?
- For internationalization, I think there are also 2 possibilities how to realize it with drupal:>
- via the i18n-module. This would mean, that sOOo would be a multiliangual website, so it would be ONE website for ALL countries. Each peace of content (called "node" in drupal) can be translated into every language. The user sees only the content in the languages he specified. Affiliate- and usersystem would be worldwide.
- via the "multi site"-ability of drupal. Each language would have a own database. The sites would be totally independent from each other, so each one would have it's OWN user- and affiliatesystem, even the main menu structure could differ.
It could get messy if we have one site where language XYZ documents appear for people using language ABC. If it's easily doable that we can have one central site, with the interface being multi-lingual, and only the appropriate language documents show up for people, that might be a good way forward.
I'm also kind of wondering "How hard is it to swap from a single site to a one site per language setup?". Like, is it worth us trying a single site thing first, in case it turns out to be practical after all?
But, I'm not at this stage personally all that multi-lingual, so maybe I'm just being impractical or naive here. ;)
Espacially if we'd chose the second way (independent sites) we would NEED people from each country willing to create content and to be in charge of the page.
Good point.
- the affiliate system is still making some problems, there are 2 modules for drupal (the one from spreadfirefox.com and one other) but none of them is currently working on drupal 4.5.2. But I'll stay tuned on it.
What does the Affiliate system do?
But now it's getting difficult .. which propsals shell I realize?
My thoughts are above, but I don't have much experience with this kind of Community nor software yet...
When registering a user though, I did notice the page hung after I pressed "Create new account". Not sure if you're viewing the software as "up and running" yet or not. I'm quite ok with having to create a user again later if need things are only temporary/not-stable-yet. :)
Hope that helps!
Regards and best wishes,
Justin Clift
