The MP strategy regarding the website is documented at http://ooosmp.homelinux.org/StrategicProposals/Website. We believe that the aims of a 'shop window' site and a 'community' site are different. With current web technology, trying to host both on the same infrastructure will result in some compromises. We get a lot of infrastructure, bandwidth, and tech support 'for free' from CollabNet; it works better for a 'community' site than a 'shop window' site, but I suspect if we really pushed we could squeeze more flexibility out of CollabNet. CollabNets' rival SourceForge manages to be both a 'community' and 'shop window' platform quite successfully (btw what happened to the SourceCast brand? has it been dropped?).[snip]
Mind, I think that Franz has basiclaly followed protocols; that's great!
I'd be interested, then, in seeing the MP leads and other members
discuss the propossal and its integration in MP'ss mandate.
I feel pretty relaxed about Frando's original proposal for a spreadopenoffice 'shop window' site. I don't think we can ever hope for a 'one culture suits all'. From time to time groups of folk will feel frustrated with mainstream OOo. I'd be happier for them to go and promote OOo elsewhere than go off and promote something else entirely. And of course the more the 'shop window' encourages people to move into the 'community', the better. For this reason, I'm less enthusiastic about some of the later suggestions that spreadopenoffice should also move into the 'community' space. However, if it improves the 'signal to noise' ratio on the mailing lists here then it would serve a useful purpose.
One minor point though. I went off to look at the spreadfirefox site, and typed automatically in spreadopenoffice.org, which turned out to be a similar but different site to spreadfirefox.com....
