Mark Miller commented on SOLR-4792:

bq. I've been unable to get the latter to do some simple things like start
This is why I've not volunteered to much more for 5.0 myself. As it is coming
right up, it's not a lot of time to make any large changes and verify that we
are not missing any toes. I've got enough that I want to fix for 5 - I'd like
to get the SolrCloud dev scripts working again, among other things.
If we are going very far down this rabbit hole, it's going to take the effort
of more than a few people to get it done properly and fully vetted in the time
frame that has been proposed.
I'm happy to simply say that we don't support being a WAR for 5 - if you count
on the WAR, it's like using internal APIs. If others have the time to do more,
I'm all for it, but there is precious little time left.
Keep in mind that we won't really have parity of features either - I still
think something like a request filter plugin point is pretty important, among
other config complications. It might make a lot of sense to keep the webapp but
not count in it for 5.x and then do a more complete switch in 6.x - once we
have the proper time to digest and discuss it all.
