I don't know if it's pingable (don't have a machine to test with), but
the music player daemon (mpd) keeps running even though X is hung.
I'll set up a machine to ssh. How do I backtrace?

The bug is recent, however it is not caused by libgl1-mesa-dri or
libgl1-mesa-glx because I downgraded them to 6.5.1-0.6 (which I believe
is Etch) and experienced the same problem. I know I've been running
lenny for some time without this issue, some is something that glx
depends on (maybe the kernel drivers or x.org?) that are the problem.
If the problem is not the libgl1-mesa-dri/gl package(s) please forward
to the appropriate package(s).
The video card is an ATI Radeo 8500 QL [r200] and I have the following
