I had a look at your X output and all seems fine.  How many FPS does
glxgears yield?  You have to run it for at least 5 seconds before it outputs
something to stdout.

If your major interest is fast 3d, you could also download a Radeon binary
snapshot from dri.sf.net.  These tarballs are small and install over an
existing XFree86 4.2.0 installation (just the necessary drivers) without
messing things up too much. ;)
