I have here a spare machine. In the hope of resolving the matter in the company of experts, I propose to do another installation of Debian, using netinst with the "expert" option. I am going to instruct Debian to use the entire drive, and to use my approx server as the Debian repository. As soon as the installation of Debian completes, I plan to use Synaptic to install Firefox-ESR and Chromium from the Debian repository. At this point, I can connect the machine directly to the modem provided by the ISP. Have I forgotten anything? RLH
