The best approach for long neglect likely is a fresh installation, which can work wonders in performance. The perspective provided by experience makes for a better installation. Many facets of an old installation (partitioning, in particular) should be considered; they may be far from optimum. And numerous new tools likely have been added to the Debian repository; a fresh installation encourages an inspection of the repository. Russ
