Because I needed new hardware I couldn't keep a stable Linux install
that satisfied my needs.

Never change a winning team!

If there's no need to update, keep a stable install, make backups and to
test newer Linux versions at least have a dual-boot.

If I could use my old stable install, I still would use it. In your case
I would reinstall the old Ubuntu that fit to your needs and I would
install a second Linux and try to get it working, when ever I would have
time to do it.

You know it yourself, I don't need to write this words to you ;).
