You are thinking too much in Kubuntu speak.

i'm doing fairly well, considering that my pre-linux language was mac
or windows, and i have been using linux /exclusively/ since 2000 or
there abouts...

You are older than me in linux world then. But time is in nothing related to knowledge, it depends on people's investment only :)

The "Kubuntu speak" is here relative to the fact that all distros seems to have different ways to think. I do not know, I did not concentrate my self-learning time on trying distros, but on understanding my little Debian. What I know is that Debian does not use notations like "Wheezy 2B" to name it's versions, but more like "Wheezy 6.0.2" by example. I thought that *buntu were using dates to indicate their version numbers, so I think you did not used a "Kubuntu speak".

Speaking about that, and out of thread, I think it is quite strange to use this version system when Debian never use middle number. Not really important anyway.

Try using an install CD or DVD

if you want to install.

i *AM* using an install CD, as i said in my original post.

perhaps you are thinking too much in "geek-speak" and not enough in
"normal-people speak"...

Hehehe... nicely reply :)

As far as I understood, you used a live CD, which is the Ubuntu's way to do things. Official Debian website only have basic installation CDs/DVDs, which does not give you a desktop with icons to click on, but simply start with a menu which immediately starts the installation.

In fact, I am thinking that you are trying to use the live debian CDs. I do not know if they are official stuff, and I was never able to find a damned iso image on the website... this could explain the strange notation numbers you are using and the references to a desktop.

So, here is my translation of the geek-speak reply you had:
Try an image you can find on www.debian.org, to be more precise, because I just discovered that the debian live stuff arrived there, try installation images:
http://www.debian.org/CD/
or
http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/
