Umm, i think you are refering to wmaker, it works under gnome and has a clip in the upperleft and 3 icons on the upperright when first run in debian. They aren't halfbad (using this myself), so i think you are running in some low resolution and color depth. maybe you could take a look in /var/log/XFree-something-log for hints of your display not being able to handle different resolutions. Try to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and make some of the higher res. work (like 800x600 or 1024x768)
You might want to have gdm or something starting X up, more easy to choose different window managers. And if all my "advice" doesn't help, you may want to post parts of the log and XF86Config-4 here so we can have a better look.
