I do not think this is a de facto standard at all yet. What pieces of
software use apply it? The length of that list should be compared to the
order of magnitude of something like $(ls -1 /etc | wc -l) on a typical
system before assuming that this has become the standard. The fact that
a given piece of software is new or written by Lennart or whoever does not make 
its
behaviour standard at all. The existence of a recommendation from IETF,
LSB or XDG does, however.
