libgal2.4-0 doesn't seem to replace libgal23 at all; it declares no Replace or Conflicts. Moreover, libgal2.4-0 comes from the gal2.4 source package, while libgal23 comes from the gal source package. They seem to be entirely different packages. Is the actual story that you are simply orphaning the gal package? That's fine; gnucash is a gnome-1 program, and cannot use gnome2 libraries.
