While I agree with your comments that the current approach seems challenging to handle, I think this discussion would be rather incomplete and one-sided without hearing from people who wish to not appear in photos. Ideally, I'd hope that people who checked that box during registration or who otherwise have reasons to avoid appearing in the conference photos could chime in on the discussion and the proposed alternative solutions. If there are people who have feedback on this topic but do not feel comfortable discussing it here, perhaps they could mail feedb...@debconf.org or otherwise contact the conference organizers, and request that someone convey their input anonymously here.
