Thanks everyone for being really helpful. I think I've decided to go with Scheme I think. It seems like it is a little friendlier to the newbie. It seems to me like in some ways Scheme is less feature bloated than common lisp. I'm sure those features are really useful, but I feel it is good to learn the basics of a language then learn the standard functions that come with it rather than the other way around. I'll keep you all updated when I actually produce something that plays better than random.
