My program was written in lisp, so naturally I concur.  I'm not
actively using lisp any more, but I will offer various dialects
of common lisp as the consensus choice of dialect.

My favorite implementation is lispworks.  The "personal edition" is
free and ought to be adequate for research.

The big caveat for using lispworks is that it's a closed universe - editor,
compiler, debugger, GUI are all in the same executable.  The integration
is great, but the strength is also the weakness if you want to share
components with any other language.
