I had a big fight with my last insurance surveyor over a few things.
He wanted the engine compartment air and watertight, not able to get gas fumes
anywhere else in the boat. This is obviously not possible.
He wanted my CNG tank in a propane locker sealed and vented overboard. I told
him the whole reason CNG was used on boats was to retrofit boats not set up for
propane because methane is lighter than air. I did eventually get propane.
He REALLY hated that I had charcoal for our grill. He had dealt with coal fires
on cargo ships from coal getting damp and self-combusting. I did get a propane
grill, but I think a bag of charcoal is not likely to do that.
I told him that the FAA does not make DC-3s comply with current build
requirements, so my boat should be good for 1973 regs, not 21st century regs.
PS – I have a FREE adapter to fill CNG tanks at a car station, it costs about
$2.00 for a fill if anyone wants it.

Brian -
Interesting (albeit unfortunate) investigation on your ins options.
I changed to Progressive to alleviate the Geico demands which would have
rivaled more than 50% of my boat’s value. Maybe more.
I spoke w the surveyor about it yesterday and he agreed - they really never
read his findings+recommendations. Just wanted every small thing repaired /
replaced like a new boat coming off the production line.

This has been a great thread to read with a lot of really good experiences
shared. Thank you!

I just renewed my policy on Nina with Geico Marine. I've had this policy for 10
yrs with no claims and the 25% per year vanishing deductible vanished 6 yrs
ago. This year they required a survey. Fortunately, a year ago a potential
buyer had a survey performed but I never received a copy. So, I contacted that
surveyor and he sold it to me for $100. It was a great survey. He kindly
modified the date to be February this year. It valued Nina more than what the
currently agreed value has been on the policy. Geico quickly renewed the policy.

I was very intrigued by Richard's mention of adding a rider to a homeowners
policy. I am also a USAA member so I called them. They transferred me around
twice and the result was not enough personal property coverage to be worth it,
plus it would not include liability. I think the reason is because the boat is
in Florida. The USAA agent then transferred me over to Progressive who
underwrites boat policies for them in this state, and still getting the USAA
discounts. Their quote with the same policy parameters ended up quoting $250
more per year, and the vanishing deductible of the same 25% per year reduction
would essentially reset for my scenario making it not worth it to switch
carriers.

GEICO also required that i get survey by Feb. 11th to re-insure my 1974 C&C 35.
After I got the new policy, which raised my rate and placed the boats value
below the survey's median value, I drop Geico. Using the same survey, the boat
is now insured with USAA/Markel at a significantly lower premium at a value
slightly above the surveyor's median but also above GEICO's value that it had
been insured for the last 8 years.

Several boat owners in my area use smaller independent insurers. Check around.
You don't necessarily have to go with one of the "big" companies.

Unfortunately not available to all but Touche' is insured through USAA. My
policy is actually a legacy policy underwritten by USAA itself. I think USAA
now uses Progressive which might be a slight recommendation for Progressive.
So, my point is to get a quote from Progressive.

Good morning all -
I know this isn’t a new topic, but given the semi-recent requirement for V & C
independent surveys for insurance, I’m shopping for an alternative to Geico.
Recently received instructions from them to completely open up / “repair” about
4’ of my stbd topside due to a somewhat higher moisture reading. Even the
surveyor said it wasn’t an issue.
I could go on belly-aching about other ‘directives’ from them, but suffice to
say am looking for your collective wisdom …and other companies !
