We used Algrip (Awlgrip?) in 1979, that system has been around a long time!

Awl Ctaft with clear coat is the way to go if you have to paint.

I often wonder if clear Paint Protection Film (PPF) would work in a newly
painted boat given it protects from UV oxidation. Additionally on could say
just wrap the boat.

I think your biggest problem is the Color Red - No one has, to my knowledge,
been able to make red colorfast, it has always been the hardest color to keep
from fading.

One thing you might try, is to, if you can, buff out or wet sand out the
oxidation, and then spray (or maybe roll and tip) some clearcoat over it. It
seems to work on cars.

When I re-worked My 39, I used a PPG product called concept, which is similar
to Awlgrip, and then sprayed a Clear coat called DCU 2082, (Stratoclear). It
held up great for the time I had it, maybe Rich can comment on if it is still
shiny.

Hello Listers,

I’m appealing for the list’s wisdom on this subject.

Grenadine was painted 7.5 years ago with red Interlux Brightside, three or four
coats rolled and tipped, successively thinned and wet sanded with each coat.
She looked fantastic!

But the paint has oxidized noticeably over the last couple years in the
high-altitude sun, despite the fact that I wax her every spring, sometimes
twice a year, and she’s in the shade on the hard every winter.

I’m not ready to spring for a new paint job yet, but I am willing to attempt a
multi-step restoration job involving cutting compound, etc. I have random
orbit dual-action polishers at my disposal, and crew to help.

What I’d like to know is whether anyone can recommend good products and
processes to get her back to that newly-painted look.

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Randy Stafford
