The last time I put an engine in, I kind of sighted it and thought it looked
straight. I ran my fingernail around the prop coupling and it seemed good
enough to get to the yard. The boat ran fine and I had their mechanic do a
“real” alignment before hauling the boat for paint. They said it was fine, no
adjustments needed.
This time I have been 3 days getting it right, moving a 380-something hunk of
iron around suddenly got harder! Did the engine get heavier or did I get older?
BTW, aligning a diesel is 100 times easier. The A4 is not fixed side to side
nor fore and aft, you get the vertical adjustments along with port/statboard,
forward/aft, and twist.
