I feel your pain. I wasted a ton of $ making mistakes along those lines. I went through exactly that problem (almost) with my 39. I wanted a 2:1 reduction, (ZF) but ended up with a 2:6 reduction, B/C the dealer didn't have the 2:1 and it was April, and I didn't want to lose the season, and had to crank the (2 blade) Maxprop up to a very high pitch, It had a very annoying chop -chop-chop sound at certain rpms - then I ended up replacing the engine and got the right 2:1 ratio, and then got a 3 blade so I could go a little smaller, and get rid of that chop sound.
I would be a little leary of going too much past the strut with only a 7/8" shaft, I felt those were too small as it was. If you move it back and get a deeper one, then you have to beef up the glass where you mount that one. Not many good options. I would put it back the way it was, and then continue looking for another boat! Sorry, I am pretty good at annoying answers.
