David,

I watch a lot of Youtube channels about cruising families and all of them
say the same thing that you encountered. Coastal sailing isn't too hard to
find and if you shop around, you can get a good deal like you did.

The one thing they all say is that once you leave the coastal USA waters.
It is nearly impossible to find coverage, or it becomes cost prohibitive.
One family said that the insurance for an Atlantic crossing was a few
thousand dollars, but they could get a policy that would cover them in
coastal Europe for a reasonable price once they got there.

The one thing that they pretty much all say is that it is a personal
decision that you should weigh yourself. If the boat were to be a loss,
would you be financially ruined? I know based on the value of my boat,
liability and a tow coverage is all I really need for coastal sailing, and
when I finally venture further... I'll be at the whims of nature and my own
ingenuity and resources.

Months ago I asked for help on this list finding insurance. It seems that
many companies don?t wish to insure boats built in the 80s, especially for
trips to the Caribbean.

On the advice of Bruce Whitmore, I contacted Wells Marine in North Carolina.
Their broker, Jason Riley, found me a policy with better coverage than
BoatUS Geico, and with a premium at 28% of the Geico?s cost. And any
company has to give better service on claims than Geico. I would pay more
just to avoid doing business with them again.

I ended up getting a policy for coastal sailing, since I?m not sure when/if
I?ll head to the Caribbean. The policy Jason found with the Caribbean rider
was the same price as Geico?s without it.

I just thought I?d pass on the information and good news!
